What is Kodi?
Kodi is a free, open-source media centre that turns almost any device — a phone, a laptop, a Fire TV Stick — into a single hub for your movies, TV, music and photos. It was created by the non-profit XBMC Foundation and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and more.
On its own, Kodi is just an empty shell — a beautiful interface with no content. You add what you want through addons, which is where most of its power (and its reputation) comes from.
Is Kodi legal?
Yes. Kodi itself is completely legal software. What matters is how you use it. Official and open-source addons that stream free, licensed or public-domain content are fine. Third-party addons that provide pirated movies, live sports or PPV events are not — and using them can carry legal risk depending on where you live.
What are Kodi addons?
Addons are small plug-ins that add features or content to Kodi. There are a few main types:
- Video addons — stream movies, TV, live channels and sports.
- Program addons — maintenance tools, cache cleaners and wizards.
- Repositories — trusted “app stores” that keep addons updated.
- Builds — complete pre-configured setups with a theme and addons bundled.
Do you need a VPN?
Not strictly — but it’s strongly recommended. Without one, your internet provider can see and log everything you stream, and may throttle your connection. A no-logs VPN encrypts your traffic, keeps your activity private, and lets you access geo-restricted addons.
Getting started
Ready to dive in? Install Kodi from the official site, connect a VPN, then follow one of our step-by-step addon guides. Each is tested and dated so you always know it works. Start with a popular all-in-one addon like The Crew, or set up a full build such as Diggz Xenon for an out-of-the-box experience.
